A Christian who became an art critic: H.R. Rookmaaker

Many people know of Rookmaaker through his friendship with Francis Schaeffer. His best known book is
Modern Art and the Death of a Culture. That book, along with a number of essays, makes up volume 5 of the set.
Rookmaaker was converted to Christianity while being held a prisoner of the Germans during World War II. His "second conversion" came when a fellow prisoner introduced him to the works of Dutch Christian philosopher Herman Dooyeweerd. After the war, Rookmaaker chose the field of art because he felt that someone in the faith needed to address that area of life.
